About me

Hello,
My name is Steve, AKA Kalon and to a select few I'm Bear, I won't go in to details on the latter but it's not what you're thinking!

I'm a Geek, I play games on an Xbox, I play table top wargames, Magic: The Gathering, a wide variety of RPG's and boardgames and I enjoy the odd episode of Star Trek, Dr Who and many other Sci-fi stuff.

I collect fossils and rocks, one of my hobbies is Astronomy and that's why this site/blog exists.

I've enjoyed the night sky for as long as I can remember, whether I was sat at my bedroom window as a small boy gazing at the moon, or hunting down Messier 92 on a cold December night in my 50's, there's always that first view or something I've never noticed before.

Astronomy can be complicated and confusing, or at least that's how it appears to be, in truth it isn't that complicated, Since you're reading this you have the basic equipment needed to observe the night sky, your eyes!

On this site I'll try to avoid technical jargon as much as possible, if jargon is necessary I'll explain it as best as I can.

There's just two things I need to make clear, for the first one I'm afraid I need to be a little bit politically incorrect, the second is probably the most important piece of advice that any astronomer, amateur or professional can give you.

1. Astronomy is a science, yes, really! If you're visiting this site to find out what it means if Uranus is in the seventh house of Capricorn, you're out of luck. Astrology is simply a load of Castor & Pollux!

2. Never, and I really do mean NEVER! look at the Sun with Binoculars or a telescope. It can severely damage your eyes and potentially cause blindness. There are some exceptions to this rule which are explained in the binoculars & telescopes section.

Gone, but never forgotten, thank you (Sir) Patrick.
